2017 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Cleburne County finished the 2016 season with a disappointing 2-8 record. Last year Cleburne County just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 5A region four with a 2-4 region record. Cleburne County took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2011. The Tigers lost as many games as in any season since 1998. The defense allowed a team record 359 points last season. The Tigers hope to rebound after a down year. Last season they struggled winning just two games which followed a 9-3 record in 2015. Cleburne County struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 35.9 points a game. Since 2010, Cleburne County has gone a combined 47-33. Their 59.0% winning percentage ranks 22nd in Class 5A over the past seven seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Cleburne County has managed to compile a record of 199-105. Their 66.0% winning percentage ranks 11th in Class 5A and 48th in the AHSAA. The Tigers are led by head coach Michael Shortt who is entering his twentieth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 141-78 over the past nineteen seasons at Cleburne County. Under his direction the Tigers have qualified for the playoffs a total of fourteen times. They have won seven region crowns with Coach Shortt. Coach Shortt's overall record as a head football coach in nineteen season stands at 141-78 (64.4%). His 141 wins rank th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Coach Shortt needs nine wins this season to reach the 150 win milestone. The Cleburne County Tigers will play in Class 5A region four during the 2017 season. The Tigers have one of the toughest schedules in Class 5A. Their opponents had a combined record of 76-42 last season. That ranks 2nd in Class 5A and 4th in the AHSAA. The Tigers enter the 2017 season in the middle of a 7 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season. With a little luck and some improvement, the Tigers could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region four this season. Cleburne County came up short of the playoffs last year but are optimistic of a return to the post season this year. The Tigers open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent Leeds on Friday, September 1 at Homer Smiles Field. Last year the Leeds Greenwave finished with an overall record of 8-4 and in third place in Class 4A region three. The Greenwave lost in the second round of the Class 4A playoffs to Andalusia by a score of 40-0. Cleburne County and Leeds have met a total of 6 times on the football field. The Tigers have a 3-3-0 record against the Greenwave. They last met in 2016 with Leeds winning by a score of 33-18. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
